On 24.03.23 the mighty Doom and Heavy Metal Kings SORCERER delivers a one-off gig in Germany/ Oberhausen. Time to meet the nice Swedish guys again for an exclusive Interview. Before the great show in a full packet club, we had the chance to talk to the hole band and hang out with one of the nicest and friendliest Bands of the Metal Business.
Lets talk about the latest album „Lamenting of the innocent“, three years ago before covid hits. Are you still happy with it and how are the reactions for it?
We are still very happy with it, when we released it the reactions and critics are very good. We had the problem that the pandemic happened, and we could not tour for it to promote.We did a few festivals last year, like the Rock Hard Festival, and played a few songs of it. It is still a very cool album. We are not focusing of selling albums, we are focusing of delivers the best music we can. As long as we can go on, we are happy. We signed a new record Deal with Metal Blade for another three albums.
What about a new album?
We are working on it and we want to put it out end of the year. Everything`s for that is written and we recording it now. It is almost done, only some solos, vocals lines and orchestration left. So we go on mixing it. We produced ourselves with the same mixing guy and same crew as always. We know what we want. The Artwork for it is also done, very cool painting. We take the best of our albums and add a bit of new ideas to it. It is still Sorcerer. The sound is very important for us. We don`t feel like a typical oldschool doom band, we are more a Heavy Metal Band.
You have done a EP in the last time with 4 Covers of Classic Metal Songs (Gates of Babylon (Rainbow), When death calls (Black Sabbath), Crusader (Saxon) & Waiting for darkness (Ozzy Osbourne)). How you choose the songs for it?
Every one of us take 5 songs each and we decided together and voted. We picked out only english bands, the classic stuff. We think we did a great job on it. Master Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath liked our version of „When death calls“. That is the best compliment we can get, makes us proud. We make videos for all four. It is a one of thing during the pandemic. You Tube Videos are a good thing to keep in mind of the fans. We do the videos ourselves.
Now an questions to Justin (Biggs, bassguitar). You are canadian. How you get the job in a swedish band?
I was sick and tired of the Canadian music scene. Everything’s there is the same boring rock music. Nothing’s cool there for me. Most of my favorite Bands come from Sweden, like Bathory or Dissection. So i jump into the cold water and went to sweden, where i met the guys. I learn the language, i have to learn to live there.
Any tour plans?
We do some festivals. We hope to play a little Festival in Lünen later this year. We are not really a touring band, but hope for more gigs in 2024. Like always, short tours and no money to earn, haha. It is hard but we love what we are doing. Everything is going so expensive, we do our best.

Am 24.03.23 lieferten die mächtigen Doom- und Heavy-Metal-Könige SORCERER einen einmaligen Gig in Deutschland/Oberhausen ab . Zeit, die netten Schweden wieder für ein exklusives Interview zu treffen. Vor der großartigen Show in einem vollgepackten Club hatten wir die Gelegenheit, mit der gesamten Band zu sprechen und mit einer der nettesten und freundlichsten Bands des Metal-Business abzuhängen.
Reden wir über das letzte Album „Lamenting of the Innocent“, vor drei Jahre bevor Covid zuschlug. Seit ihr immer noch zufrieden damit und wie sind die Reaktionen darauf?
Wir sind immer noch sehr zufrieden damit, als wir es herausbrachten, waren die Reaktionen und Kritiken sehr gut. Wir hatten das Problem, dass die Pandemie passiert ist und wir nicht dafür touren konnten, um sie zu promoten. Wir haben letztes Jahr ein paar Festivals gemacht, wie das Rock Hard Festival, und ein paar Songs davon gespielt. Es ist immer noch ein sehr cooles Album. Wir konzentrieren uns nicht darauf, Alben zu verkaufen, wir konzentrieren uns darauf, die beste Musik zu liefern, die wir können. Solange wir weitermachen können, sind wir glücklich. Wir haben einen neuen Plattenvertrag mit Metal Blade für weitere drei Alben unterschrieben.
Was ist mit einem neuen Album?
Wir arbeiten daran und wollen es Ende des Jahres herausbringen. Alles dafür ist geschrieben und wir nehmen es jetzt auf. Es ist fast fertig, nur noch ein paar Soli, Gesangslinien und Orchestrierung. Wir sind nun beim abmischen. Wir haben uns wie immer mit dem gleichen Mixer und der gleichen Crew produziert. Wir wissen, was wir wollen. Das Artwork dafür ist auch fertig, ein sehr cooles Gemälde. Wir nehmen das Beste aus unseren Alben und fügen ein paar neue Ideen hinzu. Es ist immer noch Sorcerer. Der Sound ist uns sehr wichtig. Wir fühlen uns nicht wie eine typische Oldschool-Doomband, wir sind eher eine Heavy Metal Band.

Jeder von uns hat jeweils 5 Songs ausgesucht und wir haben gemeinsam entschieden und abgestimmt. Wir haben nur englische Bands ausgesucht, das klassische Zeug. Wir denken, dass wir dabei großartige Arbeit geleistet haben. Master Tony Iommi von Black Sabbath gefiel unsere Version von „When Death Calls“. Das ist das schönste Kompliment, das wir bekommen konnten, das macht uns stolz. Wir machen Videos für alle vier Songs während der Pandemie gemacht. YouTube-Videos sind eine gute Sache, um im Gespräch zu bleiben. Wir machen die Videos selbst.
Nun eine Frage an Justin (Biggs, Bassgitarre). Du bist Kanadier. Wie bekommt man den Job in einer schwedischen Band?
Ich hatte die kanadische Musikszene satt. Alles ist da die gleiche langweilige Rockmusik. Da ist nichts cool für mich. Die meisten meiner Lieblingsbands kommen aus Schweden, wie Bathory oder Dissection. Also bin ich ins kalte Wasser gesprungen und nach Schweden gegengen, wo ich die Jungs kennengelernt habe. Ich lerne die Sprache, ich muss sie lernen, dort zu leben.
Irgendwelche Tourpläne?
Wir spielen einige Festivals. Wir hoffen, später in diesem Jahr ein kleines Festival in Lünen spielen zu können. Wir sind nicht wirklich eine Tourband, hoffen aber auf weitere Gigs in 2024. Wie immer kurze Tourneen und kein Geld zu verdienen, haha. Es ist hart, aber wir lieben, was wir tun. Alles ist so teuer geworden, aber wir geben unser Bestes.
