This article series is about the tools of popular guitarists and bassists. What are their favorite guitars or basses and how is it related to them? This time with Danny Danzi.
When you start guitar playing and do you remember your first guitar?
An old acoustic. Not sure the name but I still have it somewhere. First electric was a Kingston or Tiesco.
What are your influences and which guitar players are your favs?
Grew up listening to Terry Kath of Chicago and Brian May of Queen. One day I heard Eddie Van Halen and then the 80’s guitar bug bit me. Eddie, Randy Rhoads, Yngwie Malmsteen, Warren DeMartinni, George Lynch, Nuno Bettencourt, Dann Huff, Eric Gales, Neal Schon, John Sykes, Kee Marcello, you get the idea.
How many guitars do you own and what are your favorite models?
I’ve had up to 48. Sold quite a few but haven’t counted in a long time. I have somewhere around high 20’s I’d guess. Maybe more. My favorites are my Carvin DC 400’s, my Ibaenez USA Custom series, and my B.C. Rich Bich, Iron Bird and Stealth guitars.
What do you think makes the perfect guitar and amp? How do you feel about the question of modeler or tube amp?
The perfect guitar just feels right. You’ll know when you play it. Kinda like in Harry Potter when they say „the wand chooses the Wizard.“ I believe the right guitar and amp combination will eventually choose the player. For me, which will answer your second part of your question, I like my Carvin guitars along with a Fractal Audio AxeFX pre-amp. I just think you get such a wider array of amps and sounds along with several speaker cab impulses. Plus, Fractal has tube tone down to where I can’t tell it’s not a real amp. I’ve been using pre-amps now for many years and have gotten rid of all my amps but 3. I have one tube amp left..a Peavey Ultra 120. I love modeling pre-amps and have never been happier with my sounds.
Which guitars and amps were used on the new album?
My brown Carvin DC400 and my blonde one which is the same model with different pickups. As far as amps, I used the Fractal AxeFX XL+ using a modified Marshall JCM 800 into an impulse I created of a 25 watt Greenback Celestion cabinet. I used both an Ovation custom legend acoustic and an Ibanez acoustic. For bass, I used an Ibanez Soundgear 5 string and a Charvel 4 string.

When you only can choose one guitar, which one will you take?
Carvin DC400 Customs that I’ve had built especially for me are all I need as they are every guitar I could ever want wrapped up into one. 🙂

Sincerely,

Danny Danzi
