EvilDead fans, listen up: 27 March 2026 will see the rerelease by the American thrash metal act of their cult albums ‚Annihilation Of Civilization‘ and ‚The Underworld‘ on CD, LP and for digital download, including a number of bonus tracks. The original recordings date back to 1989 and 1991 and have been remastered by Bill Metoyer (Slayer, Armored Saint). At the time, both albums laid the foundations for the band’s career, which – following an extended hiatus – continues to this day. EvilDead’s music has always been marked by a brilliant mix of speed and thrash metal, with hard riffs, fast drums and lyrics that critically address political and social issues as well as themes such as horror and apocalyptic scenarios. „The late eighties and early nineties were important years for us,“ guitarist and band founder Juan Garcia (Agent Steel, Body Count) recalls. „We were signed by Steamhammer, released our first two albums and played some fantastic shows. With the onset of the grunge movement in the early nineties, many U.S. record companies were focused on signing bands that sounded like Nirvana. We never conformed to that trend and instead stayed true to EvilDead’s thrash metal roots.“

EvilDead’s 1989 debut album, ‚Annihilation of Civilization‘, was recorded in collaboration with Cacey McMakin (Megadeth, Nuclear Assault, among others) at the Music Grinder Studios in Los Angeles. „The recordings were an important learning process for us,“ remembers Garcia. „We used some great equipment; and we´re able to afford new amplifiers at last and modify our guitars with better pickups.“ The bonus tracks ‚Run Again‘, ‚Rise Above‘ (Black Flag cover), and ‚Sloe-Death‘ were originally released as an EP (now completely out of print), while ‚B.O.H.I.C.A.‘ was only available as a bonus track on the first CD version.

Just under two years later, their second album, ‚The Underworld‘, was recorded with the support of producer Warren Croyle at the Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California. Garcia: „The album sounded decidedly more progressive and received great reviews in Europe. We used a custom-built Rupert Neve analogue mixing console, famous for the iconic sound of albums by Fleetwood Mac and REO Speedwagon, among others.“ The bonus tracks for ‚The Underworld‘ include live versions of ‚The ´Hood‘ and ‚Darkness‘ from 1992. There’s no studio version ever recorded of the song ‚Darkness‘ which was originally written to be featured on a horror movie soundtrack.

Garcia: „Compiling and remastering these two rereleases was pretty time-consuming, as was searching for old original photos for the booklet. But our fans have been asking for a rerelease for years, and I’m happy to announce: the long wait is over at last!“

Mit Beginn der Grunge-Bewegung Anfang der Neunziger waren Plattenfirmen dann nur noch auf Bands fokussiert, die wie Nirvana klangen. Wir haben uns diesem Trend jedoch nie angepasst, sondern sind unseren Thrash Metal-Wurzeln treugeblieben.“

Das 1989er Debütalbum ‚Annihilation of Civilization‘ wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Cacey McMakin (u.a. Garcia: „Die Scheibe klang etwas progressiver und erntete in Europa großartige Kritiken. Wir verwendeten ein maßgeschneidertes Rupert-Neve-Analogmischpult, das berühmt ist für den ikonischen Sound unter anderem von Fleetwood Mac- und REO Speedwagon-Alben.“ Als Bonustracks auf ‚The Underworld‘ gibt es Live-Versionen von ‚The ´Hood‘ und ‚Darkness‘ aus dem Jahr 1992. Vom Song ‚Darkness‘, der seinerzeit für einen Horrorfilm-Soundtrack komponiert wurde, existiert keine Studioversion.

Garcia: „Die beiden Re-Releases zusammenzustellen und zu remastern war sehr zeitaufwendig, ebenso wie die Suche nach alten Originalfotos fürs Booklet. Aber unsere Fans fragen schon seit Jahren nach einer Wiederveröffentlichung, jetzt kann ich verkünden: Das Warten hat ein Ende!“
