VÖ Tipp: AXEL RUDI PELL – Ghost Town – Steamhammer – 20 March 2026

You need neither encyclopaedia nor satnav to enjoy the music of Bochum-based guitarist, composer and band mastermind Axel Rudi Pell. Because what applies to most successful musicians also goes for Pell: His songs are marked by his typical, unmistakable signature, a hybrid of powerful guitar riffs and catchy melodies, presented by a brilliant band consisting of American vocalist Johnny Gioeli, former Rainbow drummer Bobby Rondinelli, bassist Volker Krawczak and keyboardist Ferdy Doernberg. And although Pell has been wowing his fans with this impressive mix for well over 35 (!) years, his albums have always included a number of surprises and/or remarkable collaborations. His current studio offering, ‚Ghost Town‘, is no exception, Axel Rudi Pell having added another eleven masterpieces to his long list of outstanding songs.

‚Ghost Town‘ has been scheduled for release on Steamhammer/Open Distribution on 20 March 2026 and will be available in five different formats (digipak, CD, double LP, box set and digital download). Three lead singles are set to see the light of day ahead of the album’s arrival: 11 December 2025 will see the launch of the title track ‚Ghost Town‘, including lyric video, followed by ‚Sanity‘ on 29 January 2026, and the melancholy ‚Guillotine Walk‘ will premiere on 5 March 2026, just a few days before the album’s release. There will be a brand-new live video clip to support ‚Guillotine Walk‘, due to be recorded on 12 December 2025 during ARP’s show at the Rock Out Festival in Augsburg.

The eleven tracks on ‚Ghost Town‘ also feature a number of notable innovations, such as the slow-paced, atmospheric ‚The Enemy Within‘, a successful mix of different stylistic elements, from doom along the lines of Black Sabbath through melodies that bring to mind the style of early Rainbow classics to alternative rock elements, which in this shape and form are a new addition to Pell’s musical canon. Thematically, ‚The Enemy Within‘ is, as its title suggests, about the eternal struggle against inner demons that so many people have to fight.

The story behind the album opener ‚Guillotine Walk‘ is also compelling: On his way to the scaffold, a man who’s been sentenced to death reflects on his wasted life. What is unusual here is that Pell deliberately refrains from using his characteristic guitar riffs on the verses to allow the song’s melancholy atmosphere the space it needs. Of course, ‚Ghost Town‘ also includes a ballad, entitled ‚Towards The Shore‘, which happens to be keyboardist Ferdy Doernberg’s favourite, his piano accompaniment creating an irresistibly haunting mood. And last but not least, ‚Breaking Seals‘ features a sensational duet starring frontman Johnny Gioeli together with German metal legend Udo Dirkschneider. This collaboration is an absolute first in Pell’s career and additional proof of the great respect the guitarist enjoys among his fellow musicians.

Axel Rudi Pell produced the eleven songs on ‚Ghost Town‘ himself, with Tommy Geiger (Blind Guardian, Helloween), who was also in charge of the mix, providing valuable engineering support during the recording sessions at the Blind Guardian Studios in Grefrath. The Axel Rudi Pell Band will be back on stage in December 2025 for three select concerts in Bochum, Augsburg and Karlsruhe (see tour dates), before embarking on a major European tour to coincide with the album’s launch in March 2026. Details will be announced in mid-December 2025, but until then fans are well-advised to keep their eyes and ears open, because big things are about to happen in the Axel Rudi Pell camp.

Für die Musik des Bochumer Gitarristen, Komponisten und Bandleaders Axel Rudi Pell braucht man weder Lexikon noch Navigationsgerät. Denn das, was vermutlich auf nahezu alle erfolgreichen Musiker zutrifft, gilt auch für Pell: Seine Songs tragen eine für ihn typische, jederzeit charakteristische Handschrift, ein Hybrid aus kraftvollen Gitarrenriffs und eingängigen Melodien sowie dem Fundament einer bravourös agierenden Band um den amerikanischen Sänger Johnny Gioeli, Ex- Rainbow-Drummer Bobby Rondinelli, Bassist Volker Krawczak und Keyboarder Ferdy Doernberg. Und obwohl Pell seine Fans mit dieser signifikanten Mischung bereits seit weit mehr als 35 (!) Jahren begeistert, findet man auf seinen Alben immer wieder raffinierte Überraschungen oder bemerkenswerte Kooperationen. Auch auf seiner aktuellen Studioscheibe ‚Ghost Town‘ steht fest: Axel Rudi Pell vergrößert die lange Liste großartiger Songs seiner Karriere um weitere elf Exponate.

Veröffentlicht wird ‚Ghost Town‘ am 20. März 2026 über Steamhammer/Open Distribution in fünf unterschiedlichen Formaten (Digipak, CD, Doppel-LP, Box, Download). Bereits vorab gibt es drei Singleauskopplungen: Am 11. Dezember 2025 erscheint der Titelsong ‚Ghost Town‘ inklusive eines Lyric-Videos, gefolgt von ‚Sanity‘ am 29. Januar 2026 und dem melancholischen Song ‚Guillotine Walk‘, der seine Premiere am 5. März 2026 und somit nur wenige Tage vor dem Album-Release feiert. Für ‚Guillotine Walk‘ wird es dann einen brandneuen Live-Videoclip geben, der am 12. Dezember 2025 im Rahmen der Show beim Augsburger ‚Rock Out Festival‘ aufgezeichnet wird.

Auch unter den elf Songs auf ‚Ghost Town‘ findet man ein paar erwähnenswerte Neuerungen: Da gibt es zum Beispiel mit dem schleppend-atmosphärischen ‚The Enemy Within‘ einen gelungenen Mix unterschiedlicher Stilmittel, von doomig á la Black Sabbath über melodisch im Stil früherer Rainbow-Klassiker bis zu Elementen aus dem Alternative Rock, wie es sie bei Pell in dieser Form bislang noch nicht gab. Thematisch geht es in ‚The Enemy Within‘ dem Songtitel entsprechend um den ewigwährenden Kampf gegen die inneren Dämonen, den viele Menschen austragen müssen.

Spannend ist auch die Geschichte hinter ‚Guillotine Walk‘, dem Album-Opener, in dem ein zum Tode Verurteilter auf dem Weg zum Schafott sein verpfuschtes Leben vor seinem geistigen Auge Revue passieren lässt. Ungewöhnlich hier: In den Strophen verzichtet Pell bewusst auf sein charakteristisches Gitarrenriffing, um der melancholischen Grundstimmung des Songs den notwendigen Freiraum zu geben. Natürlich darf mit ‚Towards The Shore‘ auch die obligatorische Ballade auf ‚Ghost Town‘ nicht fehlen, es ist die Lieblingsnummer von Keyboarder Ferdy Doernberg, der mit seiner Klavierbegleitung für die passende Stimmung sorgt. Und last, but not least: In ‚Breaking Seals‘ kommt es zu einem aufsehenerregenden Duett zwischen Pell-Frontmann Johnny Gioeli und der deutschen Metal-Legende Udo Dirkschneider. Diese Kooperation ist in Pells Karriere ein absolutes Novum und ein weiteres Indiz für den großen Respekt, den der Gitarrist unter seinen Musikerkollegen genießt.

Produziert hat Axel Rudi Pell die elf Songs von ‚Ghost Town‘ höchstpersönlich. Für die Aufnahmen in den ‚Blind Guardian Studios‘ in Grefrath stand ihm Tommy Geiger (Blind Guardian, Helloween), der das Album auch gemischt hat, tatkräftig als Engineer zur Seite. Bereits im Dezember 2025 wird die Axel Rudi Pell Band für drei ausgewählte Konzerte in Bochum, Augsburg und Karlsruhe wieder auf der Bühne stehen (siehe Tourdaten), bevor pünktlich zur Albumveröffentlichung im März 2026 eine große Europatournee stattfindet.
