When you start bass playing and do you remember your first bass?
Yes, of course! I remember it very well! I’d already been given an amp a month earlier (a 50W Laney that I still own!), and I worked a summer job to afford my first bass! I spent a long time torn between a B.C. Rich Warlock and a bright red Ibanez SDGR 600; when I went back to the shop to make my choice, the Warlock had already been sold! But I have no regrets—I’ve come a long way with that Ibanez, which has undergone quite a few modifications over the years. As a side note, I lent it to Nico (the guitarist from Gorod), and he’s had it for a good ten years now.

Ca faisait dejà 1 mois qu’on m’avait offert un ampli (un laney 50W que je possède toujours!) et j’ai travaillé un mois d’été pour pouvoir m’offrir ma première basse! J’ai longtemps hésité entre une BC Rich warlock et une Ibanez SDGR 600 rouge pétante, et quand je suis retourné au magasin pour prendre ma décision, la warlock était vendue! Mais je ne regrette pas, j’ai fait un bon bout de chemin avec cette Ibanez qui a subi pas mal de transformation au fil des années. Pour la petite histoire, je l’ai prêtée à Nico (guitariste de Gorod) qui l’a depuis une bonne dizaine d’années maintenant.)
What are your influences and which bass players are your favs?
I started out as a metalhead, so I swore by Cliff Burton and Robert Trujillo (back in his Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves days). I quickly moved into death metal, and the bassist who really blew my mind was Steve DiGiorgio, thanks to his work with Death and Sadus. I remember arguing with another bassist about exactly what he was playing on the *Human* album! I was a big fan of Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse)—not just for his incredible playing, of course, but also for his stage presence. Fortunately for me, I had a bass teacher for a year who opened me up to other styles—specifically jazz—introducing me to artists like Weather Report, Miles Davis (though my mom already listened to him at home), Stanley Clarke, and Herbie Hancock. The standard of bassists (and musicians in general) these days is absolutely mind-blowing; I see it all the time on tour and at concerts. For me, Nick Shinz (Havok, Nuclear Power Trio, etc.) stands head and shoulders above the rest, thanks to his mastery of the instrument, his musicality, and his total commitment on stage.
J’ai commencé en étant un metalhead donc je ne jurai que par Cliff Burton et Robert Trujillo (ST et Infectious Grooves à l’époque). J’ai vite basculé dans le deathmetal et le bassiste qui m’a retourné la tête c’était steve DiGiorgio pour son travail dans Death et Sadus. Je me souviens qu’avec un autre bassiste on se prenait la tête pour savoir ce qu’il jouait sur Human! J’ai beaucoup aimé Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) notamment pour son attitude sur scène en plus de son jeu incroyable bien sûr! Heureusement pour moi j’ai eu un prof de basse pendant un an qui m’a ouvert à d’autres styles une partie du jazz notamment avec des artistes comme Weather report, Miles Davis (même si ma mère en écoutait déjà à la maison), Stanley clarke ou Herbie Hancock. Actuellement le niveau des bassistes (et des musiciens en général) est juste hallucinant je m’en rends compte en tournée ou à de nombreux concerts. Je dirai que Nick Shinz (Havok, Nuclear Power Trio…) est pour moi un musicien au dessus du lot de part sa maîtrise de l’instrument, sa musicalité et son engagement total sur scène.
How many basses do you own and what are your favorite models?
Haha! That’s the question that drives everyone around you who isn’t a musician crazy! Right now, I own about fifteen basses, but I only regularly use four or five of them—mainly due to tuning requirements. For Gorod, I use the body of an Aria Pro 2 ZZB Custom paired with a custom neck made by Vektor Instrument. There are no original parts left on that bass, and it’s tuned to ADAE (starting from the low string). I chose this tuning because it gives me the range of a 5-string instrument on a 4-string. Mat (Gorod’s other guitarist)—who is incredibly talented in many areas—also builds instruments, and we’re planning to build a matching bass and guitar together for upcoming tours!
Ahah! C’est la question qui fâche toutes les personnes de ton entourage qui ne sont pas musiciennes! Actuellement j’ai une quinzaine de basse et je ne me sers régulièrement que de 4/5 d’entre elles notamment pour des raisons d’accordage. Dans Gorod j’utilise le corps d’une Aria Pro 2 ZZB Custom avec un manche custom fait par Vektor Instrument. Il n’y a rien d’origine sur cette basse et elle est accordé en ADAE du grave en partant de la corde grave. J’ai choisi cet accordage car il me permet d’avoir la tessiture d’une 5 cordes sur une 4 cordes.
Mat (autre guitariste de Gorod), qui est quelqu’un de très doué dans de nombreux domaines fabrique également des instruments et on devrait construire ensemble une basse et une guitare assortie pour les prochaines tournées!
What do you think makes the perfect bass and amp?
It’s the bassist, without a doubt! Your sound and your relationship with your instrument are deeply personal matters, so there are as many ideal setups as there are bassists. With all the new technologies emerging today, the choices are endless. It takes time, but depending on how you play, how you hold the instrument, and your style, you learn to identify the qualities you like in every instrument you play. Gradually, you find the perfect instrument for you at a given moment. But as you evolve, your instrument needs to evolve with you. Personally, when it comes to basses, it depends on the project and my mood at the time, but for amps, I’m definitely an Ampeg guy! For me, no other brand sounds quite as good. I own several heads—including a classic ’95 SVT, a late-60s SVT, and a 90s SVT-3—and I simply can’t choose between them because they’re all perfect!
Sans hésitation, le bassiste!! Le son, la relation avec ton instrument sont des choses très personnelles donc il y a autant de configurations idéales que de bassistes. Avec toutes les nouvelles technologies qui se développent aujourd’hui, le choix est infini. Cela prend un certain temps, mais suivant ta manière de jouer, tenir ton instrument, ton style, tu apprends à définir les points qui te plaisent dans chaque instrument que tu joues. Et petit à petit tu trouves un instrument parfait pour toi à un instant T. Mais comme tu évolues, ton instrument doit évoluer avec toi. Personnelement pour les basses, c’est une question de projets et d’envie du moment, mais pour les amplis je suis définitivement Ampeg!! Pour moi il n’y a aucune marque qui sonne aussi bien. J’ai plusieurs têtes notamment une SVT classique de 95, une SVT de la fin des années 60 et une SVT 3 des années 90 entre lesquelles je suis incapable de choisir tant elles sont parfaites!!
Which basses and amps were used on the new album or for recordings?
For the recording of *The Ember Gone*, I used my Vektor as my main instrument and my semi-fretted Yamaha—with a 37-inch scale length neck—for the fretless parts. Our sound engineer just wanted a DI signal for the mix, so I went along with his request—since that’s how he works, even if it’s not my preferred method. It’s simply more convenient in terms of recording comfort and timing.
Pour l’enregistrement de the Ember Gone j’ai donc utiliser ma Vektor en instrument principal et ma Yamaha semi frettée avec un diapason de 37 pouces pour les parties fretless. Notre ingé son voulait juste une prise DI pour mixer, alors je me suis plié à sa demande puisqu’il travaille ainsi même si ce n’est pas ma méthode favorite. C’est juste plus pratique niveau confort d’enregistrement et timing.
When you only can choose one bass, which one will you take?
That’s a tough one! As I said before, it depends on the project and my mood at the time… but if I had to pick just one right now, it would be one of my Charvels, because I played it last night! Otherwise, I hope that’ll be the next one I own! Thanks for your questions and cheers!!
